Freek Wallagh, Night Mayor of the Dutch capital, is a poet, activist and painter, graduate of the University of Amsterdam – Department of Political Science, and co-founder of the cultural organisation Nachtlab.
He began his career at the age of 15 in the famed Red Light District, writing about the communities and individuals that shape the city into its current form. From drag queens, activists and sex workers to artists and the homeless, Wallagh acts as an emotional historian, documenting the lives and challenges of those on the margins of society. He has a degree in political science and has worked in politics for several years as a strategist for progressive causes. Last March, his work on both the artistic and political fronts earned him the position of ‘Night Mayor’, being elected to represent Amsterdam’s night.
Freek Wallagh is now an ambassador for change and a nightlife advocate. He believes that night culture is often neglected, so he advocates for its enhancement. Combining his vast experience with genuine passion, he brings a fresh and effervescent energy to the dialogue between art and politics.
