Night Theater, the bus play, is a project that brings many new elements. Andreea Tănase, the writer of the text, admits that this is the first time she has worked on a theater project in a moving bus, when the urban context influences the structure of the text, when she inserts such personalized content into a story, when she encounters many other elements she has never encountered before when working on a performance. For example, timing chunks of text so there’s as accurate a timing as possible for when the bus stops or is on the move, using Google Maps to create story structure, and more. And surely this project will be interesting to say the least when implemented.
The text created by the playwright is a collage of fiction and elements inspired by the stories she heard. Together with director Cătălin Mardale, she talked to different people in Timișoara, questioned them about life in the city at night and asked them to share their stories.
Neither of us live in Timisoara, but we wanted to be here to create the play because this way you can actually experience the city, its rhythm, the people, you can observe how they talk, how they live, what is going on around them, what is absent. You have access to a much more intimate knowledge and, from here, you relate in a different way in order to create a story that can reach someone who is a tourist for the first time in Timișoara, but also someone who has lived in the city all his life, said the writer.
They also wanted, from the beginning, to work with actors who live in the city because they know it better than they do. Being a show about Timișoara, the actors’ personal stories were a natural part of the process. Sometimes they were also guides around the city, discovering the place through their eyes and their experiences here.
With an unconventional setting, authentic characters and stories inspired by reality, Night Theater promises to redefine the way we view nightlife and experience theater, bringing light into the darkness of the city.
