Daniel Popescu constantly explores unusual connections at the intersection of art, technology and education. In addition to his academic duties in the Sculpture Department and in the management of projects at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, he is involved in the coordination of the artistic direction for the Lights On festival.
I am a person of extraordinary dynamism, even effervescent, and that feeds off the energy of the many projects I have in mind. In general, I always have new initiatives, but I keep enough room for spontaneity.
Daniel is a linker between different fields and a go-getter who is always looking to create positive and intense experiences for those around him. This passion also influences his artistic creation and the two aspects of his personality, artist and connector, merge and influence each other.
As far as the artist Daniel Popescu is concerned, I think that the two characters merge and absorb each other, as they go through the same states both in and out of the studio. The elements of my lifestyle translate very well both in the studio and in the way I design my installations. I like to start from a well-defined plan, I equip myself with a lot of patience and above all, I try to make the most of my time. I also work with a wide variety of people in the production of the installations, which not only adds to the atmosphere, but also makes it an experience in itself.
Daniel has experimented in the past with several artistic techniques, starting with video art and photography, but has found that installations are the most appropriate form of expression to create intense and immersive experiences. He works with reflective materials, light sources and interaction with the environment to create installations that induce deep states of contemplation and transformative perception.
I don’t know if in the future I will remain within the boundaries set by installation or move in other directions, but I will certainly continue to be concerned with how I can transform spaces to alter the viewer’s perception, which is a defining line of my vision.
Daniel finds inspiration in light itself and the ways in which it can be manipulated to completely change human perception and experience. He asks questions about the nature of light, how we perceive it and how it can be controlled, and these questions are transformed into artworks that challenge us to think about how we see and feel the world around us. We are happy to have him on board as a support in the creation of the most unusual installation line-ups, but also as an artist whose work always fascinates us.
