“Floating Earth” is a monumental installation by artist Luke Jerram. This impressive 10 meter diameter project was co-commissioned by Light Night Wigan and Quays Culture and aims to create a sensation of the Overview Effect, a phenomenon first described by author Frank White in 1987.

This effect is often described by astronauts as a state of wonder for the planet, a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all life forms, as well as a renewed sense of responsibility to protect the environment.

“Floating Earth” is not only a spectacular piece of art, but also an opportunity for difficult but necessary discussions about climate change and what we, as individuals and society can do to make our lifestyles sustainable. The installation is presented with a surround sound composition by Dan Jones.

This installation has been featured in several notable venues, including the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, UK in 2023, Brescia, the Italian Capital of Culture in 2023, Canary Wharf, London for Winter Lights 2023 at the Cultuurcentrum Sint-Niklaas in Belgium in 2022, at Light Waves, Salford, UK in 2021, and at Light Night Wigan, UK in 2022.

“Floating Earth” is a wonderful example of how art can contribute to the global dialogue on environmental issues and motivate change towards a more sustainable future.
